Excerpt:

“The Human Rights Center today published “Under Attack: Targeting of Journalists and Human Rights Defenders in Mexico,” a public platform presenting the findings of a multi-year investigation into the persecution of journalists and human rights defenders during the presidency of Andrés Manuel López Obrador (2018–2024). The platform documents how journalists and defenders covering crime, corruption, and state abuses were targeted as a group: stigmatized from the presidential podium; harassed online by state-run networks; unlawfully surveilled by the military; subjected to abusive legal process by state officials; and, at the campaign’s most lethal, killed or forcibly disappeared.

“The investigation identified 337 journalists and human rights defenders killed during the six-year term—78 journalists and 259 defenders—and found that these killings were the visible edge of a broader attack on the same group, one the state openly encouraged and rarely punished. Impunity for crimes against this group remained between roughly 93 and 99 percent throughout the period.”

“Journalists in the EU face increasing levels of harassment, threats and violence, while news outlets are owned by a shrinking number of proprietors and public trust in the media has plummeted, a report has found.

The Civil Liberties Union for Europe (Liberties) said the findings of its fifth annual media freedom report, released on Tuesday, should place EU officials “on high alert”, with media freedom and pluralism “under sustained attack” across mainland Europe.

Europe’s leading civil liberties group also warned public media independence was being steadily eroded by political interference and budget cuts, and journalists were being increasingly hampered by restrictions on free expression and access to information.

“A healthy, pluralistic media system is a litmus test and mirror of democracy,” said Eva Simon, Liberties’ senior advocacy officer. “Where the rule of law weakens – through deliberate government action or neglect – media freedom is undermined.”

Excerpt:

“In New Delhi, where the main protests broke out, at least 39 journalists were detained over the course of the next two days, according to CPJ’s review of news reports, direct interviews, and verified social media posts by editors, journalists, and their newsrooms. Four more journalists were detained while covering solidarity protests in other cities, including Alt News correspondent Kinjal in Ahmedabad and Scroll’s Divya Aslesha in Pune on October 10. In Mumbai, police detained The Quint’s Swati Chopra and Mohit Manwani at Shivaji Park on October 11, while they covered a solidarity protest.

Police continued detaining journalists even after Supreme Court justices won assurances from Solicitor-General Tushar Mehta on October 11 that lawyers, journalists, and other professionals would not be impeded in their professional duties. The court, which is due to hear the matter again on October 13, also directed that no one be detained except by procedure established by law.

“CPJ’s research shows that, on October 10 and 11, Indian police detained at least 37 journalists while they were covering protests against the chief election commissioner — with several also being assaulted, heckled, or obstructed in their work,” said Kunal Majumder, CPJ’s Asia-Pacific program coordinator. “These incidents are deeply troubling and a blot on India’s democratic traditions. They violate international standards on press freedom and journalists’ constitutional rights, and also contradict the government’s assurance to the Supreme Court that journalists would not be impeded in their work. As the world’s largest democracy, India has a special responsibility to uphold press freedom, protect journalists from interference, and hold police officers accountable for assaulting or obstructing them.”

The protests were called by the Cockroach Janta Party, a youth-led political movement, together with student groups and opposition parties, to demand the resignation of India’s chief election commissioner, Gyanesh Kumar. Protesters allege that a nationwide revision of voter rolls has wrongly removed eligible voters, allegations that the Election Commission and the government deny.”

May 3, 2026 is World Press Freedom Day

Excerpt: “For years, World Press Freedom Day on May 3 has helped spotlight global press freedom violations. It’s a day to demand justice for journalists murdered in Gaza and Lebanon, or to celebrate the release of wrongfully detained reporters like Ahmed Shihab-Eldin.

Holding foreign regimes accountable for press freedom is essential. But this year, the U.S. needs to take a hard look in the mirror, too.

Since last year’s World Press Freedom Day, our U.S. Press Freedom Tracker has documented hundreds of press freedom violations in the United States, the equivalent of more than one per day. Taken together, these incidents are evidence of an unprecedented, coordinated assault on press freedom being led by the highest levels of our government.

From the streets of Minneapolis to the halls of the Pentagon, the Trump administration is dismantling the First Amendment right to gather and report the news.”
